In 2021 I did a webinar for the Hotel Marketing Association (HMA) with Pamela Carvell, lifestyle and nutritional consultant.
We recognised marketer’s anxiety levels were high after working from home, being furloughed or working in situ throughout in closed hotels turned takeaway kitchens and there was a need in the hospitality industry to focus more on wellness. Even now that people are back at work there is still anxiety about whether there is going to be further changes needed, challenging targets, adjusting to a different way of working and needing to maintain a team’s performance so the content remains relevant.
Having gone through several change programmes in my corporate career, I share some of my own learning as a manager of people and what helps me to feel calmer in stressful times.
> Change your internal narrative
> Understand what you can control and let go of what you can’t
> Take positive steps to keep your energy levels up.
> Know what you need from work colleagues and be prepared to ask for it.
> Find things that calms your anxiety. Not lots of processed food or alcohol, we recommend knitting, breathing exercises or dancing around the living room!
Managing people through change?
> Understand what your responsibilities are as a manager of people during a change programme
> Keep your team informed and be mindful of their wellbeing
> Decide how you want to show up. When your team look back at this time of change, how do you want people to remember you?
You can watch the complete video on the HMA You Tube channel which also includes Pamela’s top tips.
